History

Native to the Mediterranean and regions of Asia and Europe, lemon balm has been utilized since ancient times to calm the heart and the body. One of its first recorded uses was as a wine-infused liniment mentioned by the Greek physician Dioscorides in the 1st century. In the 14th century, Carmelite nuns in France formulated "Carmelite water," a distilled digestive tonic featuring lemon balm that remained popular for centuries. Its generic name, Melissa, is the Greek word for honeybee, honoring the bee’s love for this herb and the ancient mythology of the "melissai" nymphs who were credited with discovering honey.
