History

Native to the coastal mountains and high deserts of California and Baja California, white sage is one of the most significant ceremonial plants of the Indigenous peoples of the Southwest. The Chumash people, who call the plant we'wey, have utilized its leaves, seeds, and roots for millennia in both physical medicine and spiritual practice. Historically, the smoke from burning white sage bundles was used at all stages of life, including weddings, births, and deaths, to purify living spaces and carry prayers to the divine. This "sacred sage" remains a deeply cherished symbol of protection and renewal today.

Benefits

Energetic: White sage is primarily utilized as a ritual tool to clear unfavorable or stagnant energy from a person, object, or space. It is believed to attach to negative vibrations and dissipate them, helping to reset the energy of a home after conflict or stress and invite a sense of spiritual balance.

Physical: This botanical contains natural antimicrobial and antioxidant compounds that can help reduce airborne bacteria when burned, effectively acting as a natural air purifier. Traditionally, it has been used as a remedy for the common cold, a stomach tonic, and a topical wash for skin health.

Aromatherapy: The crisp, earthy, and resinous scent of white sage has a direct, calming influence on the brain, making it a perfect companion for meditation or yoga. Its aromatic constituents are known to help alleviate anxiety, improve mood, and enhance the quality of sleep by creating a peaceful and grounding environment.

Our White Sage

Due to increased popularity and changing climate conditions, Salvia apiana is at risk for overharvesting and is listed on the United Plant Savers, “To Watch” list. Due to the stress on wild populations, we do not use any wild-harvested sage, and instead source a sustainable, organically cultivated White Sage from a farm in Southern California.
